Focus on Foundations: Work/Life Balance
What does work/life balance have to do with health?
The short answer: An unbalanced life leads to stress and stress kills.
| |
A longer, more technical answer: Excessive stress sets off a chemical chain reaction in your body that produces free radicals. Free radicals cause oxidative stress and inflammation, which are implicated in the root cause of over 80 percent of the illnesses we face in the United States today. This includes the biggest killers such as heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers.
Other side effects of an unbalanced life include reduced productivity. The harder you work, the less productive you become. The less productive you are, the longer you must work to keep up your overall productivity. The technical term for this scenario is “downward spiral.”
